Higher power, water bills for expats in UAE expected from January 2014

Customers of the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (Fewa) will see their bills jump 14 to 17 per cent from January 2014 onwards, Gulf News can reveal.
Fewa said in a statement to Gulf News that the hike will be implemented after the December 2013 billing cycle, on both water and electricity slab rates.

“This increased percentage will be on the slab rate. The total change will be divided between both [electricity and water slabs],” it said.

“The primary motivation for the changes was a realisation that, on average, the UAE, per capita, consumes twice as much water and electricity as the international average per individual. Our goal, as such, is to ensure that this difference is reduced by at least 20 per cent over the coming three years, and the breakdown will be divided accordingly.”
