3rd and 4th line between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod for facilitating Semi High-Speed Trains (575 Kms):

3rd and 4th line between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod for facilitating Semi High-Speed Trains (575 Kms):
The existing railway line between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod is highly saturated and due to sharp curves and older alignment, the average sectional speed of Mail/Express trains are limited to 45 Kmph. The proposed 3rd and 4th lines are planned to be in mostly straight alignment which is designed to run at a Semi-High Speed of 180 Kmph. This makes the travel between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod faster at an average speed of 130 Kmphie. Less than 4 hours compared with the present 10 to 12 hrs. The approximate cost of the project is Rs. 46, 769/- Crore.

Kerala: Railways gives its nod to Thiruvananthapuram-Kasargod semi hi-speed rail corridor

P S Gopikrishnan UnnithanThiruvananthapuramOctober 28, 2017 UPDATED 16:10 IST

Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani

The Railways has approved major schemes proposed by the Kerala Rail Development Corporation Ltd (KRDCL) at a meeting between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani.

The KRDCL is a joint venture between Kerala and the Indian Railways for executing rail projects on a 51:49 cost-sharing basis.

Lohani agreed in principle to a proposal for two additional lines between Thiruvananthapuram and Kasaragod, parallel to the existing double line. The two cities are located 575 kilometres apart, and the new lines will ease the burden on the current tracks, which are currently overloaded.

The state had suggested constructing a high-speed line, but the Railways pointed out technical issues. However, it said a semi-high speed line could be considered.

Lohani has agreed to conduct a survey and prepare a detailed project report. The estimated cost of the Thiruvananthapuram-Kasargod corridor is Rs 16,600 crore.

The Rail Development Corporation has already prepared detailed project reports for a third and fourth line between Thiruvananthapuram and Chengannur, parallel to the current 125 km line of 125 km. The estimated cost is Rs 1,943 crores.

THALASERRY-MYSORE

Lohani said the detailed report (DPR) on the Thalassery-Mysore (via Mananthavady) route will be completed before December 31. The cost of the 247-km line has been estimated at Rs 3,209 crore.

The current Thalaserry-Mysore route is about 810 km long. The new line will reduce travel time by 12 hours, and the distance by 570 km.

If it is approved by the Railways, the project will becompleted by 2024.

Lohani assured Chief Minister Vijayan that the Railways will consider building a 65 km Erumeli-Punalur line to connects the proposed Sabari rail line with the Kollam-Shencottai line.

Kerala has also proposed a new line between Balaramapuram and Vizhinjam, which will link the upcoming Vizhinjam International Seaport to the main line.

NEW TERMINALS

In an effort to ease traffic in central Kerala, the state government wants to construct a new terminus in Ernakulam, a busy junction.

The proposed terminus is is expected to reduce technical delays.

A terminal in Kochuveli, one of the two long-pending requirements in the Thiruvananthapuram division, will be completed by 2019 if land is made available, Lohani said.

UNCERTAINTY ABOUT TWO PROJECTS

The Palakkad railway coach factory was announced in the 2008-09 Railway Budget.

The government acquired 239 acres of land, but the Railways hasn't done anything to implement the project.

Although the Railway Board chairman said the issue will be looked into, a final decision will be made only after the overall situation in the country is considered.

Interestingly, a proposed line between Nilambur-Nanjangod line wasn't discussed at the meeting between Pinarayi Vijayan and Ashwani Lohani.

The project, which had been proposed in earlier budgets, was seen as a bypass line between Kerala and Bengaluru.

Currently, it takes 14 to 16 hours to travel by train from Trivandrum to Bengaluru. But a line between Nilambur (near Shornur) and Nanjangod (near Mysore in Karnataka) would reduce that to just 10 hours - a boon for passengers from central andsouthern Kerala, and for freight trains.

A link line from Kozhikode to Sulthan Bathery in Wayanad had also been proposed, and there were allegations that the Kannur lobby, promoted by Left parties, tried to axe this project for the Mysore-Thalaserry line.
