Samsung planning to unveil iPhone 6

Even as the world awaits the launch of the iPhone 6, rival Samsung is quietly preparing a new model that could offset the impact of Apple’s new device. And what better way to do it than to come out with a phone that looks like an iPhone?

If rumours and image leaks of the latest Samsung device – Galaxy Alpha – are anything to go by, Samsung has designed the device differently from any of its previous models - introducing more metal and a more solid bezel with curvy corners.

Chinese website Weibo has published the images which it claims to be of the Alpha.

Earlier, the Wall Street Journal had reported that the South Korean firm was planning to come out with a new device made of new materials, indicating that there would be something different compared to the earlier Galaxy series devices.

The report quoted Kim Hyun-Joon, a senior vice president at Samsung’s mobile-communications business but did not provide any additional details about the new devices.

However, rumour mills have almost filled in the blanks and we could be talking about a 4.7-inch device powered not by Qualcomm but Samsung’s own Octa-core Exynos 5 processor, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB internal storage and a 12 MP camera with auto focus functions. Tech blog, Sammobile, quoting a UK retailer points out that Samsung has set the price of the device at £549 (Dh3,400).

It is also believed that Samsung could come out with a second, phablet-sized Alpha device.

Apple, too, it is believed could come up with a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and a 5.5-inch phablet sized iPhone Air.

Samsung, it is being reported, could launch the device on August 13, a month earlier than Apple’s rumoured launch date for the iPhone 6.

Apart from the Alpha, Samsung is all set to release the next in the Galaxy Note series – the Note 4 early next month.

Samsung is already said to have sent out invites for an event on September 3, ahead of the IFA in Berlin. The 5.7-inch Note 4 will sport a 20.7MP camera with optical image stabilisation and 4K recording
