taxi service for pets in Dubai

Now, you and your pet can hail a cab without much stress here in the UAE. Those who’ve been struggling to transport their pets due to the “no animals on board” policy on public transport can now make use of a private service that promises to transport your pet wherever you want in the country.

Run by British expat Arthur Obyrne, the team comprises two full-time and two part-time volunteers, who are trained to deal with animals.

“I have started this because I love animals and want to give top quality service that’s safe and secure. We have dog safety belts, and carriers of all sizes,” he adds.

“It’s stress-free and enjoyable. I might make as much money, but I am happier.”

Arthur gave up a full-time, high-paying job to start this taxi service. “Like my wife says, I gave up the suit for the shorts.”

That shift from a financial set-up to his pet taxi service happened when he spent his spare time helping friends transport their pets to the vet or day care.

“I sensed there was an opportunity to do something. I spoke to vets and animal clinics, and they all informed about this struggle. While some clinics offer transport only to their patients, it wasn’t enough. So, I decided to step in.”

The service called Pet Taxis Dubai costs Dh75 for 30minutes, and is available across the seven emirates.

Arthur, who started the service in August last year, uses his own cars – a jeep and a trail-blazer – for the service. “Even my colleagues use their own cars.”

His job is 24/7, with calls sometimes coming in as early as 2am. “Once a lady was stuck at the Dubai airport with her bull dog, and couldn’t go to her home in the Greens because she couldn’t hail a cab. She didn’t even have a licence so she couldn’t hire a car. She called me, and I rushed to help.”

Arthur maintains that he has adequate approval from the Road Transport Authority (RTA) for the service, although he was unaware initially that this was disallowed.

His service has had an “organic growth” by word-of-mouth publicity. “I’m yet to work on a marketing strategy, but will start working on a model and ways to use social media.”

Pet owners in Dubai are happy that they have a service exclusive for them.
