Atlantis-like 'Floating City' shows possible ocean-based societies of the future

Some of the same technologies being used to build a 31-mile bridge between Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai might be used on the city.Caters News AgencySome of the same technologies being used to build a 31-mile bridge between Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai might be used on the city.
Atlantis may not be the only city in the ocean if these bold new designs are a sign of the future.
This incredible "Floating City" was designed by British and Asian-based design firm AT Design Office and commissioned by Chinese construction firm CCCC.
The Floating City, an eco-friendly alternative to building on land, will have an above-ground layer and an underwater layer with an area of four square miles.
Two designated areas of greenery will also be accompanied by a series of tunnels and walkways to allow inhabitants to move around the city's hexagonal modules.
With minimizing the conventional city's carbon footprint being the main objective, AT Design Office have added eco-friendly touches such as electronic cars and a series of canals for boats and submarines to act as one of the main forms transportation.

Other notable features include a farm and a waste disposal centre, which the designers hope will make the water-based society self-sufficient.
For those just wanting to visit there will be a large cruise dock to facilitate travel and tourism to and from the island.
If the project were to become a reality, CCCC will use some of the same technologies they are currently using to build a 31-mile bridge between Hong Kong, Macau and Zhuhai.
Siska Slavomir, an architect at AT Design Office, said: "Part of that bridge is an underwater tunnel which is joined by a 150-metre-long precast concrete box.

"The mega box is cast on a nearby island and floated to site before being connected.
"We were appointed to work with the engineer to come up with a master plan for a 10-square-kilometre floating island that can be built with the same technology.
"The project offered an opportunity to develop a new urban nucleus of world-class residential, commercial and cultural facilities, as well as to promote a zero-carbon, energy-efficient and self-sufficient city."
