Abu Dhabi: A ministerial decision is enough to amend a controversial customs rule which restricts the amount of gold Indian expatriates can carry home, an Indian minister said.
Amending the four-decade-old controversial customs rule on gold ornaments, unpopular with Indian expatriates, is not a complicated official procedure, but simply requires a ministerial decision, Vayalar Ravi, Indian Minister of Overseas Affairs, told Gulf News.
The finance minister can take a decision to amend the rule because it was framed by the Ministry of Finance, not a law passed by the Indian parliament, Ravi said in reply to a question.
Asked whether the amendment needed cabinet approval, ravi reiterated that a ministerial decision was enough.
He said he would take up the matter again with Finance Minister P.Chidambaram.
Asked about the reasons for the delay, Ravi said: “I was under the impression that the rule was already amended because I did not receive any complaints from expatriates recently. It was brought to my attention when I reached the UAE [on an official visit
