- India's captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (L) leads his men off the field after they won their Twenty20 World Cup Super 8 cricket match against South Africa in Colombo October 2, 2012. India won the match by 1 run, but were knocked out after South Africa scored more than 121 runs, allowing Pakistan to take a place in the semifinals.
Colombo: India recorded a consolation one-run victory over South Africa, but crashed out of the (ICC) World Twenty20 at the Premadasa Stadium on run rate last night.
Pakistan, following their victory over Australia and superior run rate earlier in the day yesterday, progress to the semis from Group 2 with the Australians. The Pakistanis will take on Sri Lanka in the first semi-final on October 4, while Australia, despite losing to Pakistan, will meet West Indies in the second semi on October 5.
Needing to restrict South Africa to 121 runs to qualify for the semi-finals, India failed in their objective but won off the last ball. Faf du Plessis was the destroyer of India’s hopes with an elegant knock of 65 off 38 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Earlier, India had posted a challenging total of 152 runs.
