US fugitive brought back to UAE

A US businessman facing corruption charges in Dubai has returned to the UAE, after his attempts to flee to his home country through Yemen failed, UAE daily newspaper The National reported on Sunday.

Businessman Zack Shahin had spent several years in a Dubai jail while awaiting trial for corruption charges, but was recently released on bail on the condition that he surrendered his passport and did not leave the country.

However the former chief executive of the Dubai-based development company, Deyaar, then fled to Yemen in the hope of gaining US diplomatic assistance, but was later caught at a Yemen airport.

He was deported back to the UAE moments before he boarded a plane taking him to the US via Istanbul.

“Zack was delivered in custody to Sana’a airport and placed on a plane to Dubai, without a court hearing on extradition or other formal process of which we are aware,” Darren Spink, the businessman’s spokesmen, was quoted as saying by The National.
