Mass fight at Fujairah court

A judge at an appeals court in Fujairah ended hearings into a murder case after a scuffle broke out between the relatives of the defendant and the victim, prompting security forces to intervene, press reports said on Tuesday.

The judge tried in vain to restore calm to court after a large number of relatives of both parties were involved in a heated argument before jumping on each other, the Sharjah-based Alkhlaeej Arabic language daily said.

Repeated hammering by the judge failed to end the pandemonium, which was aggravated when the Emirati defendant jumped out of the cage and lunged at the relatives of the victim, the paper said.

“In the end, security forces intervened and ended the anarchy while the judge decided to postpone the session,” it said.

A court in the eastern emirate had earlier sentenced the defendant to death after he was convicted of murdering the victim, also an Emirati, by a sword.
