Gitex Shopper opens at the Dubai World Trade Centre

Dubai: Retailers are optimistic about Gitex Shopper on the first day but are feeling the pressure to maximise their sales as exhibition rents increase this year, they said.
Gitex Shopper was officially opened yesterday by Shaikh Majid Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The consumer IT and electronics show runs until Saturday at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Major tech retailers said yesterday that the exhibiting costs rose by 15 to 20 per cent, eating into the profit margins of electronics sales,
“Rents are taking a chunk of that [sales] but there is support by the vendors so it is not fully loaded on the retailers,” said Neelesh Bhatnagar, chief executive of Emax, noting a 15 per cent increase this year.
Omar Abu Shaban, head of operations for Plug-ins, said exhibition costs rose by 20 per cent. “It puts pressure on margins, every year it becomes more expensive in Gitex Shopper but it’s a lot of excitement for retailers.”
