London: India’s wait for a first ever badminton Olympic medal became a reality when Saina Nehwal’s opponent Xin Wang retired with an injury in the bronze medal play-off at the Wembley Arena here on Saturday.
Wang was leading 1-0 in the second game after winning a tough first one 21-18 when the Chinese went down on her haunches, pain written all over her face.
The world number 2 from China had taken a medical time-out for treatment on her left knee while on match point in the first game. She won the first point on her serve, and then sunk to the floor to be assisted off the court by the medics. Shortly after this, she conceded the match to a beaming Nehwal.
Later, China’s Li Xuerui, the third-seeded 21-year-old, won the women’s badminton singles gold medal, beating world champion Wang Yihan, 21-15, 21-23, 21-17.
“I was confident I could win against her and that is why I slept much better last night,” Nehwal said.
