UAE cops have arrested an Emirati motorist after it is claimed he was caught exceeding the speed limit in a residential area by more than six times, daily newspaper Gulf News reported on Sunday.
The man, who now faces prosecution, is accused of driving 194 kmh (120.5 mph) in a 30 kmh zone in Abu Dhabi, the report added.
Police have also impounded the man’s car.
There were 23 pedestrians killed on Abu Dhabi roads and 29 injured during the first five months of this year, the newspaper added, citing Lieutenant Hussain Al Harithi, director of the Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Directorate
“Breaking the speed limit is considered a breach of the traffic law, and poses a great threat to children and pedestrians, especially in residential areas. Many traffic accidents result from such reckless driving,” Al Harithi was quoted as saying.
The speed limit on residential roads in Abu Dhabi is 30 kmh, and it drops to 20 kmh on service roads.
Recently the UAE government issued instructions for speeding and reckless motorists to be punished more severely.
