Expat couple names baby after UAE

An expat couple in Abu Dhabi has named their first-born child 'Emirates', after the country they call home, UAE daily The National reported on Wednesday.

Syrian Morad Al Arabi and his wife decided to name their baby daughter, who was born on July 6, after the country "that feels like our home," the paper reported.

"We have been living here for more than 18 years, and we really love the UAE," Al Arabi said.

"I love everything about this country in terms of the quality of life and the relationships we have made here. We have been living here happily, and this is our way to honour the country."

The proud father told The National his daughter's unique name raised eyebrows at first, but now friends and family "think it was a great idea".

"At first, everyone was surprised, but they all have said that they appreciate that her name is very special," Al Arabi said.
