Indian Grand Prix inaugural winner Sebastian Vettel

With a 4.5 seconds lead over second-placed Jenson Button at lap 32, it wasn’t surprising that Sebastian Vettel looked comfortably placed to win the inaugural Indian Grand Prix. h is similar to what happened at turn eight during qualifying. Force India' Adrian Sutil was ninth while the only Indian driver in the race, Narain Karthikeyan, finished 17th for Hispania.

A slow middle sector in lap 39 slowed Button down too much for him to offer any challenge for Vettel who won his 11th race of the year. He eventually finished 8.4 seconds slower while Fernando Alonso, who came in third, was 15.8 seconds off Vettel. The best competition on the track for most of the second half was between Mark Webber and Alonso and between Michael Schumacher and Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, both battles between two seconds of the competing cars. Schumacher finished fifth while Alonso came in third despite Webber’s late effort which saw him pull to within a second of the Spaniard in the Ferrari.

Williams’ Pastor Maldonado was the first retirement of the race because of a gearbox problem while Sebastian Buemi, who had showed some great skill through the early half of the race, threw in the towel after his car began to pour out smoke.

The win here earned Vettel, who led from start to finish, his 11th victory of the season and he is now on course to equal Schumacher’s 2004 record of
13-wins in one season.
