The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is sending out security alerts to its customer in wake of a fresh wave of phishing attacks.
Following an alert posted on its official Twitter handle, DEWA has also sent SMS messages to customers, warning of a fake email doing the rounds.
The message reads: “Dear Customer, Please do not open or reply to any email sent from customercare@dewabill.com.”
When Emirates 24|7 contacted DEWA, a spokesperson said: “We regularly provide security alerts to our customers and with this recent wave of phishing attacks, we felt the need to have another awareness campaign highlighting our correct email address.”
The spokesperson reiterated that the only email address used by DEWA remains ‘noreply@dewa.gov.ae’.
Any other email address disguising itself as the official authority should be considered as suspicious malware or a virus and deleted immediately.
Phishing is tagged as the act of sending an email where someone falsely claims to be a legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering personal information that may be used for identity theft.
Usually, the email will direct the user to a website, which will ask them to provide private information, including passwords, credit card details and bank account numbers.
