Dubai taxis will begin accepting payments through credit cards and pre-paid Nol cards from April, UAE daily Gulf News reported.
A Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) official said taxis in the emirate have already been upgraded to accept the new forms of payment.
“We have already upgraded taxi meters and conducted tests, which have been very successful, so we will go with the launch by beginning of quarter 2 of this year,” said Eisa Abdul Rahman Al Dossri, CEO of RTA’s Public Transport Agency (PTA).
Under the new system, commuters will be able to pay their taxi fare through pre-paid Nol cards, which are used to access the public transport system including buses and Metro.
Additionally, both Visa and MasterCards can be used to pay the fare.
“The system will work with all types of cards supported by our payment provider namely Network International,” Dossari said.
The move is expected to benefit commuters greatly, Dossari said.
"It will save people from the headache of keeping change as on many occasions the taxi drivers don’t have change and customers have to go out looking for change. Nol and credit card payment options will add to people’s convenience,”
